Development of an ontology for aerospace engine components degradation in service

    Get PDF
This paper presents the development of an ontology for component service degradation. In this paper, degradation mechanisms in gas turbine metallic components are used for a case study to explain how a taxonomy within an ontology can be validated. The validation method used in this paper uses an iterative process and sanity checks. Data extracted from on-demand textual information are filtered and grouped into classes of degradation mechanisms. Various concepts are systematically and hierarchically arranged for use in the service maintenance ontology. The allocation of the mechanisms to the AS-IS ontology presents a robust data collection hub. Data integrity is guaranteed when the TO-BE ontology is introduced to analyse processes relative to various failure events. The initial evaluation reveals improvement in the performance of the TO-BE domain ontology based on iterations and updates with recognised mechanisms. The information extracted and collected is required to improve service k nowledge and performance feedback which are important for service engineers. Existing research areas such as natural language processing, knowledge management, and information extraction were also examined

Crossing Goal Lines and Borders: Engaging Black Male Student-Athletes in Education Abroad

    Get PDF
Many Black male student-athletes suffer from identity foreclosure at rates higher than their white peers as they fail to develop salient aspects of their identity outside of the athlete role (Murphy, Petitpas, & Brewer, 1996; Beamon, 2012).  Education abroad offers the opportunity to take advantage of a holistic collegiate experience, which impedes the detrimental effects of the athletic identity foreclosure process. International educational opportunities can positively influence Black male student-athletes’ personal, academic, and professional development as they come to see the world beyond the gym and campus. This article examines the significance and value of creating education abroad opportunities for Black male student-athletes as a means of providing meaningful educational opportunities in the realm of higher education

PHYSTAT-LHC Workshop on Statistical Issues for LHC Physics

    Get PDF
A PHYSTAT workshop on the topic of Statistical issues for LHC physics was held at CERN. The workshop focused on issues related to discovery that we hope will be relevant to the LHC. These proceedings contain written versions of nearly all the talks, several of which were given by professional statisticians. The talks varied from general overviews, to those describing searches for specific particles. The treatment of background uncertainties figured prominently. Many of the talks describing search strategies for new effects should be of interest not only to particle physicists but also to scientists in other fields
